MamaRootHalf_signFirst Fruits Garden (FFG) is an outreach program originating from Avon Christian Church, and is designed to encourage community gardens to grow, produce, and cultivate a sharing spirit. The FFG model encourages garden growers to donate 10 percent of their produce to local food pantries, in reference to the idea of tithing in the Bible.  First Fruits Garden is in essence the template or model of a community garden.  Here you will find:

  • a step-by-step guide embedded with media to develop your community garden.
  • a source for gathering resources for your organization: (curriculum, recipes, and how-to segments)
  • information about working with food pantries and food insecure families’ participating in community gardening
  • a guide to help develop a grand harvest celebration

Welcome to the First Fruits Garden webpage.  We will be adding content to the site over the next few months, such as planting ideas, spotlights on community gardens in Hendricks County, and tasty recipes.

This webpage will also have specific information for the First Fruits Garden plot, such as the plot map, status of crops and suggestions for diseases and problems seen in the garden.  We are also publishing a newsletter specifically for those interested in the First Fruits Garden, and the first issue will be distributed in March.

Whether you are looking to start your own community garden, or are interested in participating in ours, let us know at the Contact Us page.  We would love to hear from you.
